Volkswagen just teased us with design details of the new Transporter van

Volkswagen just shared the first design details of the seventh generation of BEV and PHEV Transporter van – here’s what we learned.

The new Volkswagen Transporter – what the German automaker says is a “near-production concept vehicle” – is the latest iteration of VW’s Bulli family of vans that recall the original VW Microbus. The ID BUZZ, now in production, is also in the Bulli family.

Pre-sales of the new Transporter have begun in Europe at €36,780, and market launch is planned for Q1 2025.

For now, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is releasing design details only, and spec details are sparse. So Albert Kirzinger, chief designer of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, talked about the Transporter’s design:

The details of the seventh Bulli generation pick up the characteristic design features of its six predecessors and give them a new interpretation. This has a tradition – every new Volkswagen Transporter has always represented a new visual beginning, a stylistic bridge between a long history, the present and the future.

We learned that it will be produced as both a BEV and a PHEV and that the charging socket flap is located under the right-hand headlight. (It looks like VW is making a diesel version, too. Boo.)

The Transporter is between 5,050 mm (199 inches) and 5,450 mm (215 inches) long, and VW redesigned the 16-, 17-, and 19-inch Transporter wheel rim range. The commercial Transporter will be available with a tailgate and rear wing doors.

Kirzinger said that “the front design of our seventh Transporter immediately makes it clear that it is a member of the Bulli family and complements the Multivan and ID. Buzz duo.” The rear design, however, nods to the Bulli’s T5 legacy with details like the shape of the tail lights with LED dots toward the sides, but it’s been redesigned and technically revamped.

We look forward to VW releasing more of the nitty-gritty details on the Transporter before it hits the market in less than a year.
