Kia overtakes Hyundai in US electric vehicle sales in Q2 as its new EV9 sparks growth

Kia sold more electric vehicles in the US in Q2 than its sister company, Hyundai. After EV sales more than doubled in the second quarter, Kia looks to keep up the momentum as its new EV9 helps gain market share.

Kia’s first three-row electric SUV is already fueling a sales spike. After launching late last year in the US, Kia sold 9,671 EV9s through the first six months of 2024.

The EV9 helped propel Kia to a new record, with over 29,000 EVs sold in the first half of the year. Although Kia’s new electric SUV is receiving most of the attention, sales of its first dedicated electric car, the EV6, were also up nearly 40% in Q2.

With the Niro EV included the growth was enough for Kia to surpass Hyundai in US EV sales in Q2.

According to the latest Kelley Blue Book data, Kia accounted for 5.4% of the market in Q2, topping Hyundai’s 5.1% share.

Kia had a bigger share than BMW (4.3%), GM’s Chevy (3.4%), Rivian (4.2%), Mercedes (2.8%), Toyota (2.3%), and VW (1.7%).
