BMW and Kith start Season 2 of their successful collaboration with the BMW i4 M50

0
BMW i4 M50

MW i4 M50 (electricity consumption in kWh/100 km: – (NEDC) / 22.5–18.0 (WLTP); electric range (WLTP) in km: 416–520) is not just the first fully electric M automobile, but also the second BMW M vehicle that New York designer Ronnie Fieg has exclusively designed as part of the collaboration between his brand, Kith, and BMW M GmbH – inside and out. Only seven BMW i4 M50 by Kith vehicles will be produced for the public. One of those is the only vehicle within this collaboration being auctioned to a global public audience. To mark the limited edition, Kith is selling a 51-piece collection comprising apparel and accessories, inspired by the colours of the Kith Vitality Green vehicle paint and BMW Individual Caramel Merino vehicle leather in its stores all over the world and online.

A symbol of the transformation of BMW in the age of electric vehicles.

In BMW M’s 50th anniversary year, a historic vehicle is bridging the gap between the past and the electrified present. As a BMW enthusiast, Ronnie Fieg has also transformed a 1972 BMW 1602 into a contemporary electric car. A homage to history: at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, two BMW 1602s, converted into electric cars, were used at various long-distance competitions as accompanying and camera cars by the organisation committee. This was the start of a pioneering, forward-looking evolution of electrified vehicles at BMW.

The unique 1972 BMW 1602 Elektro by Ronnie Fieg will be handed over to the designer by the BMW Group. He already owns an impressive collection of BMW vehicles, including a legendary BMW E30 M3 by Kith stemming from Season 1 of the collaboration. His passion for BMW was sparked as a boy by his grandfather; the collaboration with BMW M means this comes full circle for him. Ronnie Fieg founded his Kith label in 2011. The collaboration between the BMW and Kith brands started in 2020 with the design of a BMW M4 Competition Coupé by Ronnie Fieg. The 150 editions of the exclusive BMW M4 Competition × Kith were sold out in less than 30 minutes.

A combination of sportiness and aesthetics.

The success of the first brand collaboration with Kith led to this second edition, where electromobility is the focus. As the first fully electric M model, the BMW i4 M50 can be called the “Brand Shaper”. It has the well-regarded M DNA and as a BEV shows the responsible direction that BMW is going in. The 1972 BMW 1602 tells the story of the very first electrified BMW, which came onto the market 50 years ago and which is part of the brand’s high-performance segment. The sportiness of the lifestyle and streetwear label Kith is a perfect match for the BMW M. Ronnie Fieg gives both models a new aesthetic with his design.

BMW goes Kith Vitality Green.

For the first time ever, BMW is naming a new colour after a brand partner: Kith Vitality Green is a rich, dark green that is not available on a serial BMW, as it is limited to this exclusive collaboration. New logos merged with each other are a hallmark of the various Kith partnerships with globally famous companies. BMW changed its brand emblem for a collaboration partner for the first time two years ago. The well-known BMW emblem was again altered this time: an additional ring in the colour Kith Vitality Green was added around the brand logo that adorns the hood of the BMW i4 M50 by Kith. The green ring lists the partnership, model and year as well as the fact that it is an electric car. The logo on the hood of the 1972 BMW 1602 by Ronnie Fieg looks different again: the BMW letters have been swapped for Kith. A similar logo in black and white with the subline “Elektro-Auto” can be found as an engraving on the lid of the cup holder in the BMW i4 M50 by Kith.

The interior goes Caramel.

Kith Vitality Green is the colour in which all vehicles of the collaboration are painted. While the exterior is an exquisite green, the full-grain merino leather interior is in the colour Caramel. In the 1972 BMW 1602 Elektro by Ronnie Fieg, the leather of the seats is embossed with the Kith lettering, as are the leather inserts in the footwells for the driver and front passenger. The logo altered to feature the Kith lettering instead of BMW can also be found on the centre holes of the rims.

The interior of the BMW i4 M50 by Kith is also particularly harmoniously coordinated in Caramel. The knee bolster, steering column, seat and side panelling, as well as the lower part of the A and B posts are all upholstered in merino leather. The front and rear floor mats are also trimmed in caramel-coloured leather and embroidered with the M logo, which has been changed to Kith, and the M stripes. Kith lettering in a box design is embossed on the headrests as well as the front centre armrest. “KITH Exclusive Edition” has been laser-engraved into the trim.

Technology and luxury in the limited edition.

The technology has been taken over from the BMW i4 M50, which combines the innovative power of the BMW M with that of the BMW i for the first time. The BMW i4 M50 with its fully electric powertrain fed by two BMW M eDrive motors achieves a powerful 400 kW (544 hp) in Sport Boost mode and offers a dynamism typical of a BMW M in an as-yet-unseen edition, which takes it from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. It is locally emission-free and has a reach of up to 520 kilometres according to WLTP. As the first purely electric Gran Coupé from BMW M, this extraordinary vehicle creates a class of its own and proves itself for everyday use too, thanks to its impressive reach, luxurious spaciousness and intelligent networking.

In addition to the standard equipment in the BMW i4 M50 and specific scope of the Kith collaboration, the model is equipped with a few special additions as standard. Alongside the adaptive M chassis, these include the M sports brakes with red brake callipers, the M aerodynamic package and the BMW Individual Shadow Line lights. The Professional and Plus driving assistants also contribute to the luxurious driving feeling, as well as the electric sliding glass roof, the fine oak wood trim and the M high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim. The features are rounded off by the Harman/Kardon surround sound audio system, which provides the perfect soundtrack to the joy and driving experience in the BMW i4 M50 by Kith.

2023 will be a year of strong acceleration in the electrification of the PEUGEOT range: from the first half of 2023, all PEUGEOT models will be available with one or more electrified powertrains.

This will give PEUGEOT the widest “e-choice” in Europe, with many new models and technologies. From electric bicycles to vans, e-scooters and passenger cars, PEUGEOT will meet all electric mobility needs, and will be taking a further step towards its goal of making 0 emission, 100% electric sales in Europe by 2030.

The introduction of new hybrid powertrains from the beginning of 2023, initially on the PEUGEOT 3008 and PEUGEOT 5008, will broaden the technological offer, adding to new 100% battery electric solutions on the E-208 and E-308, hydrogen fuel cell and two and four-wheel drive plug-in hybrids.

New hybrid technology for the PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008

2023 will be an “electric year” for PEUGEOT, with the brand introducing new models and technologies to its range.

PEUGEOT will be the first Stellantis brand to launch the group’s new generation of hybrid powertrains, once again emphasising its desire to give as many people as possible access to electrified mobility.

First offered on the PEUGEOT 3008 and PEUGEOT 5008 SUVs before being extended to other models in the range, this new generation hybrid technology combines efficiency and ease of use.

It consists of a new-generation 136hp PureTech petrol engine, coupled with a new electrified dual-clutch gearbox. Thanks to a 48V battery that is recharged while driving, this technology offers extra torque at low revs and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption. It also enables zero-emission driving for up to 1 km at low speeds and for short distances in the city.

A further expansion of the 100% electric range: launch of the E-308 and E-308 SW

The PEUGEOT range of 100% electric models will be expanded in 2023 with the arrival of the new E-308 and E-308 SW. PEUGEOT will be one of the first European manufacturers to offer a 100% electric estate car. With its saloon and station wagon, the Lion Brand will be able to meet all the needs of C-segment customers who wish to make the transition to zero-emission mobility.

Dynamism and driving pleasure, essential elements of PEUGEOT’s DNA, were at the heart of the development of these new models, which inherit a new and particularly powerful electric motor developing 115 kW (156 bhp).

The new E-308 and E-308 SW also set a new benchmark in terms of electric efficiency, only 12.7 kWh/100 km (useful energy / WLTP range), a benchmark among C-segment electric vehicles, while offering a range of over 400 km (subject to the WLTP mixed cycle). This performance has been made possible thanks to all the advances made in terms of motor and battery, as well as aerodynamics, weight optimisation with the new EMP2 platform, and the reduction of frictional losses.

Also in the C-segment, PEUGEOT has confirmed the future launch of a PEUGEOT E-408 alongside the plug-in hybrid versions of its dynamic and innovative fastback.

The PEUGEOT E-408 will round out a 100% electric PEUGEOT range that meets all needs, from the PEUGEOT E-208 to the PEUGEOT e-TRAVELLER combispace, including the PEUGEOT e-2008, E-308, E-308 SW and e-RIFTER.

Another PEUGEOT E-208: more performance and more efficiency

The E-208 is the trailblazer in PEUGEOT’s 100% electric range and will undergo some major developments in 2023, namely with the new motor introduced on the E-308. The E-208’s maximum power output will increase by 15%, from 100 kW/136 bhp to 115 kW/156 bhp.

Efficiency has also been optimised, to be kept to just 12 kWh/100 km, providing the E-208 with a 10.5% increase in range, or an extra 38 km to a total of 400 km in the WLTP combined cycle (under approval).

With a torque of 260 Nm available from 0 km/h, the PEUGEOT E-208 is silent and vibration-free and is as easy to handle and generous in terms of sensations. This further strengthens the dynamic qualities that have made it such a success. However, it is also attentive to serene daily use. For example, the PEUGEOT E-208 will get a rapid charge from a 100 kW terminal, going from 20% to 80% of charge in less than 25 minutes, like it currently does.

All of these qualities should complement the success of the PEUGEOT E-208, which has been the top-selling electric B-segment car in Europe since the beginning of 2022, and top of electric car sales in France. The PEUGEOT E-208 has already sold almost 110,000 units since its launch in 2019.

The plug-in hybrid at the heart of the PEUGEOT electric range

With the aim of offering an electric mobility solution that meets the needs of all uses, PEUGEOT has developed a particularly comprehensive plug-in hybrid range. Sedans, SW estate cars or SUVs, these models combine the allure, emotion and excellence that have made PEUGEOT successful with remarkable efficiency.

The PEUGEOT 308 and 308 SW plug-in hybrids are available in two power levels, 180 or 225 bhp, and offer up to 60 km of range in 100% electric mode. These engines have also been adopted by the all-new PEUGEOT 408, which will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show from 17 to 23 October 2022.

For its part, the PEUGEOT 3008 offers 225 bhp rechargeable hybrid engines, or 300 bhp with all-wheel drive, enabling it to travel up to 59 km without using the combustion engine. Finally, the PEUGEOT 508 is available as a saloon and SW, with a 225 bhp plug-in hybrid engine or a 360 bhp sports engine and 4-wheel drive for the PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED versions.

PEUGEOT’s plug-in hybrid technology is also being put to the test on the track by the PEUGEOT 9X8 Hybrid Hypercar, which has been racing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) since July 2022.

New PEUGEOT e-EXPERT Hydrogen with fuel cell: zero emission mobility for professionals

Equipped with hydrogen fuel cell technology, the new PEUGEOT e-EXPERT Hydrogen is PEUGEOT’s offering to professionals and local authorities looking for the most innovative zero-emission mobility solutions. The major advantage of the fully electric PEUGEOT e-EXPERT Hydrogen lies in the reduced recharging time of its hydrogen tank, only 3 minutes.

With a range of 400 km, 100 kW of power and 260 Nm of torque, the PEUGEOT e-EXPERT Hydrogen can carry up to 1,000 kg of payload in a 6.1 m3 load volume.

PEUGEOT is also making its two-wheelers electric!

PEUGEOT will be adding to its range of electric mobility solutions, even for two-wheelers and will be revealing a new 100% electric scooter, the PEUGEOT e-Streetzone, at the Paris Motor Show. It will offer up to 112 km of autonomy in 2-battery version and ECO mode.

Equipped with one or two removable batteries, the PEUGEOT e-Streetzone can be quickly and easily recharged at any domestic socket. Thanks to its tried and tested chassis and handling, the PEUGEOT MOTOCYCLES e-Streetzone is the ideal bike for daily commuting in urban centres.

Its new technological LCD panel also makes it practical, since, in its 1-battery version, it has a slot under the seat to accommodate a jet helmet.

Finally, PEUGEOT Cycles also offers a complete range of six electric bicycles adapted to all uses, from daily city traffic to road riding, including off-roading.

e-Solutions, a range of services makes customers’ daily lives easier

Mercedes EQS SUV – powerful electric motors, responsive 4MATIC all-wheel drive andan intelligent OFFROAD driving mode

0
EQS SUV 450+ (US specific model),Exterieur: Electric Art, diamantweiß bright; Interieur: Electric Art, Leder schwarz/spacegrau EQS SUV 450+ (US specific model),Exterior: Electric Art, diamond white bright; Interior: Electric Art, Leather black/space grey.

At market launch, the model range comprises three variants: EQS 450 + (WLTP: combined electric energy consumption: 22.9-18.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)1 and EQS 450 4MATIC (WLTP:combined electric energy consumption: 24.3-20.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)1, each with 265 kW output, and the EQS 580 4MATIC (WLTP: combined electric energy consumption: 24.3-20.2 kWh/100km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)1 with 400 kW. Depending on the vehicle equipment and configuration,WLTP ranges of up to 671 kilometres2 are possible.

The new EQS SUV shares its long wheelbase (3,210 millimetres) with the EQS Saloon, but is more than 20 centimetres higher. The dimensions in detail: 5,125/1,959/1,718 millimetres (length/width2/height3). The interior dimensions benefit from these generous SUV dimensions and from the advantages of the purpose design tailored to the electric platform. The second row of seats can be electrically adjusted as standard. Up to four golf bags fit in the boot. A third row of seats with two additional individual seats and extensive
comfort features for all passengers is available as an option.

The EQS Saloon is the current aerodynamics world champion for production cars4. Its purpose design, with a smooth underbody and mostly closed radiator shutters, provided a good starting basis for the very good Cd figure5 of the EQS SUV, from 0.26. This is achieved despite the high load capacity and short rear overhang.

Mercedes EQS SUV 580

Characteristic SUV flow details were optimised, which resulted in a unique combination of spaciousness and aerodynamic efficiency.

All EQS SUVs have an electric drive train (eATS) on the rear axle, and the versions with 4MATIC also have an eATS on the front axle. In the 4MATIC models, the Torque Shift function intelligently and continuously distributes the drive torque between the front and the rear electric motors. This also involves the use of the most efficient eATS in the particular instance. The electric motors on the front and rear axles are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM). The advantages of this design include high power density, high efficiency and high power constancy.

The EQS Saloon was the first model series from Mercedes-Benz in which additional vehicle functions can be activated in several areas via over-the-air updates (OTA).With the EQS SUV, this offer is significantly expanded. For example, Trailer Manoeuvring Assist or MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) Augmented Reality Navigation can be activated at a later date.

With the EQS SUV, Mercedes-Benz is taking a major step towards fully electric mobility and is moving a step closer to fulfilling Ambition 2039. The model is produced in a CO2-neutral way. The EQS SUV sees real solutions for fully electric mobility, intelligent resource conservation and a responsible circular economy actually put on the road.

SPORT and INDIVIDUAL, the 4MATIC versions feature OFFROAD, a further mode specifically for off-road driving. Furthermore, rear-axle steering with a steering angle of up to 4.5 degrees is standard. It provides plenty of manoeuvrability in the city and agility over land. Optionally and also via an OTA update, a version with up to 10 degrees steering angle is available.

The principles of Integral Safety, in particular accident safety, apply regardless of the platform. Like all other Mercedes-Benz models, the EQS SUV therefore has a rigid passenger compartment, special deformation zones and sophisticated restraint systems. The European version of the EQS SUV is the first Mercedes-Benz model to be able to detect whether rear seats are actually occupied. If a passenger in the rear is not wearing a seat belt, the driver receives a specific warning. Another new feature at Mercedes-Benz is what is known as
the occupant presence reminder. This system can draw attention to children in the rear of the vehicle who may have been overlooked. In vehicles for Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the reminder is on board as standard.

Mercedes me Charge offers access to one of the largest charging networks worldwide: it currently comprises over 850,000 AC and DC charging points, including around 350,000 in Europe. Since 2021, Mercedes-Benz has ensured a subsequent offset with green electricity when customers use Mercedes me Charge to charge their cars in Europe and North America. High-quality guarantees of origin ensure that as much green power from renewable energies is fed into the grid as is withdrawn via Mercedes me Charge. The new Mercedes me Charge function Plug & Charge allows convenient charging of the EQS SUV at public charging stations that support Plug & Charge.

On the basis of numerous factors, Navigation with Electric Intelligence plans the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops. It reacts dynamically to traffic jams or a change in driving style, for example. This involves a visualisation in the MBUX infotainment system as to whether the state of charge of the battery is sufficient to return to the starting point without charging. Charging stations along the route that have been added manually are given preference in the route calculation. Proposed charging stations can be excluded. The estimated charging costs per charging stop are calculated.

With ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus, Mercedes-Benz thinks holistically about air quality in the EQS SUV. The system is based on filtration, sensors, a display concept and air conditioning. The HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter has a very high filtration level to trap fine particles, microparticles, pollen and other substances entering with the outside air.
With intelligent software, MBUX fully adapts to its users and provides them with personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. With what is known as the zero layer, applications are always offered on the topmost level within the field of vision, according to situation and context.

The highlight of the interior is the MBUX Hyperscreen (special equipment). This large, curved screen unit spans almost from A-pillar to A-pillar. Three screens sit under a common cover glass and merge visually. The 12.3-inch OLED display for the front passenger gives them their own display and control area. In Europe, and in a growing number of countries, the front passenger is also able to watch dynamic content while the vehicle is on the move. This is because Mercedes-EQ is able to rely on an intelligent, camera-based blocking logic: if
the camera detects that the driver is looking at the passenger display, the system automatically dims this content.

The Dolby Atmos sound system takes the audio experience in the EQS SUV to a new level. Individual instruments or voices in the studio mix can be positioned all around the listening area. A new kind of sound animation thus becomes possible: this is because while conventional stereo systems usually have a left-right dynamic, Dolby Atmos can use the entire space and create a 360-degree experience.

Eviation’s electric commuter plane Alice makes first test flight

0

The first fully electric commuter plane Alice from Eviation Aircraft (earlier post) successfully completed its maiden flight at Moses Lake, Washington. Alice lifted off on 27 Sep at 7:10 a.m. from Grant County International Airport (MWH), flying for a total of eight minutes and reaching an altitude of 3,500 feet.

Eviation Alice is targeted at commuter and cargo markets, and will typically operate flights ranging from 150 miles to 250 miles. Cape Air and Global Crossing Airlines, both US-based regional airlines, have placed orders for 75 and 50 Alice aircraft respectively. In 2021, DHL Express announced that it ordered 12 all-electric Alice eCargo planes from Eviation, making it Eviation’s first cargo customer.

Our compliments to Eviation on the successful first flight of Alice! Completing its maiden flight confirms our belief that the era of sustainable aviation is here. With our order of 12 Alice e-cargo planes, we are investing towards our overall goal of net-zero emissions logistics. Alice’s range and capacity makes it a unique sustainable solution for our global aviation network, supporting our aspiration to make a substantial contribution in reducing our carbon footprint and ultimately, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

—John Pearson, CEO DHL Express

The all-electric Alice aircraft features a maximum operating speed of 260 knots and a maximum useful load of 2,500 lbs for passenger version and 2,600 lbs for eCargo version.

Alice is available in three variants including a nine-passenger commuter, a six-passenger executive cabin, and an eCargo version. All configurations support two crew members. The executive cabin and eCargo variations are identical to the commuter configuration, except for the interior.

Alice is powered by two magni650 electric propulsion units (EPUs) from magniX, the only flight-proven electric propulsion systems at this scale. The magni650 EPU is a 850 SHP / 640 kW / 3,000 N·m – class EPU. Each EPU includes a magni650 motor, 4 X magniDrive 100, and a closed-loop integrated thermal management system.

The EPU is designed to provide the required torque and power turning at low RPMs, the same speed as the propeller. This allows a direct motor-to-propeller connection, eliminating the need for a heavy maintenance-prone gearbox.

A 4×3-phase architecture allows for redundancy, increased reliability and graceful degradation should a fault occur. For example, in the event of a short circuit, one 3-phase section can be turned off, allowing the pilot 75% of full power.

The magniDrive 100 is a multi-application, high-performance power electronics unit including both the inverter and motor controller functions. It is designed as ‘bi-directional’, capable of both DC/AC operation for propulsion and AC/DC operation for generation. It is suitable for HVDC networks of up to 800 VDC.

Designed for unpressurized operation, the magniDrive 100 combines high thermal performance, EMI immunity and lightning protection for metallic and composite structures. The magniDrive 100 can support both analog throttle inputs (for use in retrofits, for example) as well as Fly-By-Wire controls (for newly designed aircraft).

Other key suppliers include AVL (battery support); GKN (wings); Honeywell (advanced fly-by-wire system, flight controls and avionics); Multiplast (fuselage); Parker Aerospace (six technology systems); and Potez (doors).

Alice’s advanced battery system is highly efficient and endlessly upgradeable enabling range improvements as battery technology evolves. The aircraft also incorporates a fly-by-wire cockpit, providing greater reliability and systems redundancy.

Amid more EV battery fires, Natrion unveils new solid-state battery components that would dramatically reduce fire risk

0
Cycling performance of a two-layer pouch cell at C/3 charge and discharge using LISIC278 with an NMC532 cathode and natural graphite anode.
  • Lower fire risks
  • Equivalent coulombic efficiency
  • Faster charge/discharge time

Natrion, a leader in solid state electric vehicle battery technology, today unveiled performance metrics for its patented solid-electrolyte separator in state-of-the-art Li-ion battery cells using graphite anode. This comes as more and more reports of lithium battery fires make headlines.

The new material, LISIC278, is a version of Natrion’s patented Lithium Solid Ionic Composite (LISIC) electrolyte made to mimic the exact specifications of a standard polyolefin separator while utilizing significantly less liquid electrolyte. LISIC accomplishes this by delivering high ion transport capability at ambient conditions while having a thermal resilience in excess of 200°C and being fully dense (zero porosity). The result is a near-zero fire risk for batteries built with LISIC, and a significantly reduced ability for a thermal event to intensify or expand.

“Reducing our reliance on flammable liquids in EV batteries is key to reducing fire risk and ultimately making mass EV adoption more viable. So the fact that this data shows we can produce battery cells that are just as efficient with only a small fraction of that liquid is a huge win,” said Natrion Co-Founder and CEO Alex Kosyakov. “We’re confident that this indicates the potential for many more milestones to be achieved.”

Natrion tested its new material over multiple controlled lab experiments using pouch cells up to 11 layers in thickness. In one controlled experiment, Natrion compared its LISIC278 against a standard separator at the one-layer pouch level.

The control used was a standard pouch containing NMC532 cathode, LP40 liquid electrolyte, and a natural graphite anode with a conventional state-of-the-art separator. The Natrion pouch was identical but used the LISIC278 separator in place of the conventional one.

Compared with the conventional cell, Natrion’s LISIC278 demonstrated:

  • 40% faster charge time: At a given capacity, the Natrion cell took just 3 hours to charge, compared with 5 hours for the conventional one at the same capacity
  • Exponentially lower fire risk: The Natrion cell achieved this fast charge time with only about 1/10th of the flammable liquid as the conventional cell
  • High initial coulombic efficiency: Conventional Li-ion cells typically discharge less energy than they are charged with during the first few times that they are cycled which contributes to permanent capacity loss (i.e. lower available energy or range). Natrion cells exhibited higher initial coulombic efficiencies and resultantly improved capacity retention at higher C-rates.

“Achieving high coulombic efficiency while using 70-90% less liquid electrolyte is difficult, not to mention given this capacity and C-rate threshold,” said Dr. Jon Tuck, Holistic Energy Scientist and energy storage consultant at Silent Koala. “These results are highly promising and show a versatility of use for LISIC that we have yet to see from other solid-state electrolyte materials. It signals the potential of Natrion’s materials to really advance the industry and the technological feats being developed.”

In sum, Natrion’s cell was able to deliver more energy at higher charge/discharge rates while using less flammable material. Importantly, this was accomplished using a solid electrolyte separator that is built to the exact same specifications of existing separators, for rapid integration in current battery manufacturing processes.

The company will be unveiling its results for Lithium-anode data in the coming weeks.
